One NZ's own coverage map shows moderate 4G on the climb from Soda Springs up the Devil's Staircase to South Crater, and again on the descent towards Ketetahi. Around Emerald Lakes, Central Crater and Blue Lake it shows none, and at the Mangatepopo car park where the walk starts, very little.

- Carry a power bank and a warm layer: cold drains batteries on the crater section.
