What is an eSIM top-up?
A top-up adds data to the eSIM already on your phone instead of installing a new one. Here is why that matters, and when it is not possible.
A top-up adds data, or days, to an eSIM you already have installed. Nothing new is downloaded and nothing is reinstalled: the profile on your phone stays exactly where it is, keeps the same ICCID, and simply has more credit against it.
Why it matters more than it sounds
The alternative to a top-up is buying a second eSIM, which means a second profile to install, a second line in Settings, and a moment where you have to switch between them. That is fine at home and genuinely annoying in a taxi from the airport.
A top-up avoids all of it. There is nothing to scan, nothing to install, and nothing that can fail halfway. More importantly, it works when you have run out of data, because the purchase happens through your account rather than on the phone's connection, and the network side updates without the phone having to download anything.
That last point is the whole reason the feature exists. The moment you most need more data is the moment you are least able to install something.
When it is not possible
Not every plan supports it, and the reasons are mostly structural rather than commercial:
- The plan has expired. A top-up extends something that is still alive. Once the validity has run out the profile is finished, and a new eSIM is the only route.
- The plan was not built for it. Some wholesale packages are sold as a fixed block with no mechanism to add to them.
- You are out of the covered area. Adding data to a plan for one country does not help you in the next one.
Where a plan does support it, the fact is usually stated on the plan itself. On ours it is a property of the package rather than something decided later.
Top-up and renewal are different things
Worth separating, because providers use the words loosely.
A top-up is something you do: you decide to add more. A renewal or auto-renew is something that happens on its own when a threshold is crossed. The first cannot surprise you and the second can, which is why anything automatic should be a choice you made deliberately and can see in your account.
Quick answers
Does a top-up change my ICCID?
No. It adds to the profile already installed, so the ICCID, the line in Settings and everything else stay the same.
Can I top up after my data has run out?
Yes, and that is the point of it. The purchase goes through your account rather than the phone's data connection, so it works when the line is already empty.
Why can I not top up this plan?
Either the validity has already expired, in which case there is nothing left to extend, or that particular package does not support it. Both are normally stated before you buy.
Is topping up cheaper than buying another eSIM?
Not necessarily. It is faster and simpler, which is usually what you want mid trip, but the price per gigabyte can go either way. Compare if you have the time.
