What is tethering?
Tethering shares your phone's mobile data with a laptop or tablet. Here is how to turn it on, why it is sometimes blocked, and what it does to your allowance.
Tethering is using your phone's mobile data connection on another device: a laptop, a tablet, a second phone. The phone becomes the connection, and everything else borrows it. On most phones the feature is called personal hotspot or mobile hotspot.
The three ways to do it
- Wifi. The phone broadcasts a network that other devices join. The most convenient, the heaviest on battery, and the only one that serves several devices at once.
- Bluetooth. Slower, but gentler on battery and good enough for email and messaging.
- USB cable. The fastest and the most reliable, and it charges the phone while it works. Worth remembering when a hotspot keeps dropping.
Where to find it: iPhone, Settings, Personal Hotspot. Android, Settings, Connections or Network, Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
Why it is sometimes blocked
Tethering is the feature operators most often restrict, because a laptop on a hotspot behaves nothing like a phone. It downloads updates measured in gigabytes, syncs cloud folders and streams at desktop quality, so a plan priced for phone use can be emptied in an afternoon.
The restrictions take three forms:
- Not included at all, usually on cheap or prepaid plans
- A separate smaller allowance, so an unlimited plan might include a few gigabytes of tethering
- A different APN, which is why browsing can work while the hotspot does not
That last one is worth knowing, because it does not look like a restriction. The hotspot turns on, devices connect, and nothing loads. If that happens, check whether your operator publishes a separate tethering APN.
On travel eSIMs, whether tethering is included varies by provider and sometimes by plan, so it is worth checking before you buy if you intend to work from a laptop. Our plans allow it, and it draws from the same allowance rather than a separate one.
What it does to your allowance
Tethered data is your data. There is no separate meter unless the plan creates one.
The gap between what a phone uses and what a laptop uses is the thing that catches people out. Before you tether, on the laptop: pause cloud sync, turn off automatic updates, and drop video calls to audio where you can. A single operating system update over a hotspot can cost more than the rest of the trip.
Quick answers
Does tethering use more data than browsing on the phone?
The connection is the same, but what the other device does with it is not. Laptops download updates and sync folders in the background, so the same hour costs far more.
Why does my hotspot connect but nothing loads?
Often because tethering runs through a separate APN that is missing, or because the plan does not include it. The devices join the wifi either way, which is why it looks like it should be working.
Can I tether on a travel eSIM?
It depends on the provider and sometimes on the plan, so check before buying if you need it. When it is allowed it normally draws from the same data allowance.
Which method is best?
USB if the device has a port, because it is the fastest and it charges the phone. Wifi when you need more than one device. Bluetooth when battery matters more than speed.
