Dubai: what to know before you go
- From the airport
- Dubai International (DXB) is close to the centre and connected by metro. Taxis and ride apps are cheap, and a prepaid plan works from the moment you land.
- Calls through apps
- Voice and video calls through some messaging apps are restricted on mobile data in the UAE, and messaging works normally. Rules and enforcement change, so check before you rely on them.
- Heat
- Summer heat is intense and drains a phone battery fast. Keep it out of the sun and carry a power bank.
- Attractions
- The Burj Khalifa observation decks, the desert safaris and theme parks sell tickets online with codes on your phone.
How much data you need
Five days of maps, rides and photos takes about 3 to 4 GB.
Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.
Dubai: when people go
- 31 December 2026: New Year's Eve
- Last year the Roads and Transport Authority closed roads around Downtown Dubai in phases from 4 pm, ran the Metro non-stop for 43 hours and ran free shuttle buses, with 48 fireworks displays across about 40 locations and the Burj Khalifa show at midnight. The 2026 plan is not published yet and is expected to be similar, so check the official announcements and keep an offline map and your Metro route on your phone.
- 4 December 2026 to 17 January 2027: Dubai Shopping Festival
- The 32nd edition runs for 45 days, with shopping promotions, concerts and events across the city, according to the organiser, Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment. Malls and the roads around them are busier, so allow extra time for rides and keep any event tickets on your phone.
- Expected around 8 February to 9 March 2027: Ramadan
- The start of Ramadan is expected around 8 February 2027 (a UAE astronomy centre calculation, confirmed by moon sighting) and the Eid al-Fitr holiday from around 9 or 10 March, so the dates can shift by a day. During the month malls stay open later, some restaurants close in daylight hours, Metro hours change and traffic peaks around 17:30 to 19:00 before the evening meal, so check opening hours on your phone.
- June to September 2027: summer heat
- Daily highs in July and August commonly reach about 40 to 42 Β°C with high humidity, which is why most visitors come between October and April, with January and February the busiest months according to travel guides. Plan outdoor sights for early morning or evening and download your tickets before you step outside.

Questions about Dubai
- Can I use WhatsApp calls in Dubai?
- Messages work, but voice calls through some apps are restricted. Rules and enforcement change, so use a normal phone call for anything important.
- How much does an eSIM for Dubai cost?
- Dubai uses the United Arab Emirates plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $3.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 10 plans, from 1 GB to 50 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
- Do I need a local SIM card in Dubai?
- No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
- How is it different from roaming in Dubai?
- With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
- Which networks does the Dubai eSIM use?
- Wigoo connects to Du, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
- Can I add more data?
- Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
- Do I keep my phone number?
- Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
- When do the validity days start?
- Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
- How long do I have to install the eSIM?
- An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
- Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
- Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
- What happens when the data runs out?
- Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (500 Kbps) until the next day.
- When should I install the eSIM?
- Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
