eSIM for Patagonia
Patagonia is the south of Argentina and Chile, with glaciers, peaks and some of the longest empty roads in South America. It crosses a border, and signal is thin almost everywhere between the towns.

Patagonia: what to know before you go
- Two countries
- El Calafate, El Chaltén, Bariloche and Ushuaia are in Argentina, and Torres del Paine and Punta Arenas are in Chile. Plans are per country, so a trip across the border needs both.
- Arriving
- Flights reach El Calafate, Ushuaia, Bariloche and Punta Arenas. Most other travel is by long bus or rental car.
- Signal is thin
- Towns have coverage and the long roads between them often do not. Download offline maps and fill the tank at every chance.
- National parks
- Los Glaciares and Torres del Paine have long trail stretches without signal. Book entry and camps ahead online, and keep the confirmations offline.
How much data you need
A week of maps, bookings and photos takes about 3 to 4 GB.
Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.
Patagonia: when people go
- December 2026 to February 2027: busiest months
- Most guides put the busiest weeks in these months, when excursions to Perito Moreno sell out weeks ahead and Torres del Paine refugios and campsites for the 2026 to 2027 season are already being booked. A booking is not access: trail opening is set by the park authority, and the O Circuit was closed through 31 October 2026, so recheck before you pay and keep confirmations offline.
- April 2027: autumn colours
- The lenga and ñire forests turn red and gold for a short time in April (satellite images in April 2026 showed it), and there are fewer visitors than in January and February. Days are shorter and the weather changes quickly, so check the forecast and keep offline maps for the trails.
- June to August 2027: winter and school holidays
- In winter the boat tours, transport and lodging around El Calafate are reduced, though the glacier boardwalks are generally still reachable. July is the busiest winter month in Ushuaia because of school holidays: Argentina's 2026 break was staggered across provinces between 6 and 31 July, the 2027 calendar is not yet published, and Cerro Catedral near Bariloche opened for the 2026 season on 6 July.

Questions about Patagonia
- Do I need a plan for both Argentina and Chile?
- Yes, if you cross the border. Plans are per country, so install one for each and switch when you cross.
- How much does an eSIM for Patagonia cost?
- Patagonia uses the Argentina plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $3.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
- Do I need a local SIM card in Patagonia?
- No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
- How is it different from roaming in Patagonia?
- With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
- Which networks does the Patagonia eSIM use?
- Wigoo connects to Claro and Movistar. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
- Can I add more data?
- Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
- Do I keep my phone number?
- Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
- When do the validity days start?
- Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
- How long do I have to install the eSIM?
- An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
- Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
- Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
- What happens when the data runs out?
- Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.
- When should I install the eSIM?
- Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
Crossing the border
Patagonia also reaches into other countries, and plans are per country.
