Vienna: what to know before you go

Who needs an eSIM
Phones with a European SIM roam in Austria under EU rules, so the eSIM mainly helps visitors from outside the EU and people whose home plan caps roaming.
Palace tickets
The interior of Schönbrunn is ticketed with timed entry, and you pick a slot when you book. The park is mostly free, though some garden areas need a ticket. Arrive shortly before your slot with the QR code saved.
The transport app
Wiener Linien's app, WienMobil, sells tickets that activate when you buy them. Tickets are also sold at machines in U-Bahn stations and in tobacconists. Fares changed at the start of 2026, so check the current tickets.
Day trips by train
The Wachau valley and Salzburg are day trips by train from Vienna. Buy the tickets in the railway's app before you travel and check the last return train.

How much data you need

A week of maps, ticket QR codes and photos takes about 2 to 4 GB. Train day trips add the tickets and a map.

Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.

Vienna: when people go

13 November to 26 December 2026: Christmas markets
The main Christkindlmarkt in front of the city hall is listed from 13 November to 26 December 2026, with the Schönbrunn market from 6 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Official figures counted about 3.3 million visitors at the city hall market in 2023, so the network can be slow in the evenings and an offline map and a meeting point help.
Sunday 18 April 2027: the Vienna City Marathon
The marathon is scheduled for Sunday 18 April 2027. Roads along the route close for the day, so check the transport app for diversions before you set out.
25 to 27 June 2027: the Donauinselfest
The Danube Island festival is scheduled for 25 to 27 June 2027. The island and the U-Bahn stations nearby are crowded, so the network can slow and extra time helps.

Questions about Vienna

Can I buy public transport tickets on my phone?
Yes. The city's transport app sells tickets that activate when you buy them, so you need a connection at the moment of purchase. Buy before you go underground.
Do I need to book Schönbrunn ahead?
The interior is entered at a timed slot you choose when you book, so book before you go and keep the QR code saved. The park and gardens are mostly free to walk.
How much does an eSIM for Vienna cost?
Vienna uses the Austria plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 10 plans, from 1 GB to 50 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
Do I need a local SIM card in Vienna?
No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
How is it different from roaming in Vienna?
If your SIM is from the EU, roaming here costs the same as at home, within the data your plan allows abroad. The eSIM helps when that allowance runs out, or when your line is from outside the EU: then your carrier usually charges by the day or by the megabyte.
Which networks does the Vienna eSIM use?
Wigoo connects to 3 and A1.net, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
Can I add more data?
Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
Do I keep my phone number?
Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
When do the validity days start?
Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
How long do I have to install the eSIM?
An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
What happens when the data runs out?
Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (500 Kbps) until the next day.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
