Swiss Alps: what to know before you go

Arriving
Zurich (ZRH) and Geneva (GVA) are the main airports, and trains reach most mountain villages. Rail passes and tickets are sold in apps.
Mountain railways
Trains to places like Jungfraujoch and the Gornergrat run in all but the worst weather. Check live webcams and conditions before you buy a ticket.
Coverage
Switzerland has some of the best mobile coverage in the mountains, including many tunnels and summit stations.
Outside EU roaming
Switzerland is not in the EU roaming area, so a European SIM can cost much more per day. The eSIM is prepaid.

How much data you need

A week of trains, maps and photos takes about 3 to 4 GB.

Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.

Swiss Alps: when people go

26 October to 11 December 2026: autumn maintenance closures
Many lifts close for a few weeks after the summer season: listings for 2026 show the Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg railway closed from 9 November to 4 December, the Gornergrat railway from 2 to 14 November and the Grindelwald to First cableway from 26 October to 27 November. The Jungfraujoch railway from Kleine Scheidegg and the Schilthorn cableways above Mürren are listed as running every day of the year, so check each operator before you buy a ticket.
15 to 17 January 2027: Lauberhorn ski races in Wengen
The super-G is on Friday 15 January, the downhill on Saturday 16 and the slalom on Sunday 17 January 2027, with training from 12 January and the race village open until 2 am on the Friday and Saturday. Tickets are sold online only, so save them offline, and remember that Wengen is reached by train from Lauterbrunnen.
April to early June 2027: spring maintenance closures
Some cable cars and funiculars close for several weeks in spring: for 2027 the Mürren to Allmendhubel funicular is listed closed from 5 April to 29 May, the Bettmeralp to Bettmerhorn and Fiescheralp to Eggishorn lifts from 4 April to 4 June, and the Stechelberg to Mürren cableways from 26 April to 7 May. Dates change, so confirm with the operator before you plan a summit day.
September 2027 (expected): cow descents
Villages hold festivals when cattle come down from the summer pastures, such as Urnäsch in Appenzell on 19 September in 2026, and the dates for each valley are announced only shortly before, sometimes about two weeks ahead. Check the local tourist office the week before you travel.

Questions about Swiss Alps

Is the signal good on mountain trains?
Generally yes, since coverage in Switzerland reaches many tunnels and stations. Hiking trails away from villages can still have gaps.
How much does an eSIM for Swiss Alps cost?
Swiss Alps uses the Switzerland plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 10 plans, from 1 GB to 50 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
Does EU roaming work in Switzerland?
No. Switzerland is in neither the EU nor the European Economic Area, so the EU roaming rule does not apply there and your carrier sets the price: some plans include Switzerland, many charge it separately, by the day or by the megabyte. Check yours before you go.
Do I need a local SIM card in Swiss Alps?
No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
How is it different from roaming in Swiss Alps?
With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
Which networks does the Swiss Alps eSIM use?
Wigoo connects to Salt and Sunrise, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
Can I add more data?
Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
Do I keep my phone number?
Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
When do the validity days start?
Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
How long do I have to install the eSIM?
An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
What happens when the data runs out?
Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (500 Kbps) until the next day.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
