eSIM for Tbilisi
Tbilisi is a hilly capital with sulphur baths, wine bars and the Caucasus a short drive away. Georgia is outside EU roaming, and the gateway road to the mountains has patchy signal.

Tbilisi: what to know before you go
- Arriving
- Tbilisi Airport (TBS) is about 20 minutes from the centre. Many flights land at night, and ride apps like Bolt are cheap and widely used.
- Outside EU roaming
- Georgia is not in the EU, so a European SIM can cost a lot to use there. The eSIM is prepaid.
- Kazbegi
- The Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi has strong signal in towns and gaps on the mountain stretches. Download the route.
- Wine country
- Kakheti is a day or weekend trip east of Tbilisi, with villages and wineries linked by rural roads.
How much data you need
Four days of maps, rides and photos takes about 2 to 3 GB.
Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.
Tbilisi: when people go
- Late December 2026 to 7 January 2027: New Year and Orthodox Christmas
- Georgia keeps 1 and 2 January and Orthodox Christmas on 7 January 2027 as public holidays, so offices are closed and many venues run short hours. Check opening hours, book tables and rides ahead, and keep the confirmations saved on your phone.
- December 2026 to April 2027: snow on the Kazbegi road and ski season
- Gudauri's ski season is expected to run from late December or early January to mid April 2027, with the exact dates set by the snow. The Jvari Pass on the Georgian Military Highway is prone to heavy snowfall and the roads department has closed sections of it in bad weather, so check the road status before you leave and hold offline maps for the route.
- 30 April to 3 May 2027: Orthodox Easter
- Orthodox Easter Sunday is 2 May 2027, and Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Monday are public holidays, which makes the longest holiday run of the year in Georgia. Offices close and people travel out of the capital, so book rides and rooms early and check opening hours on the map.
- September and October 2027: grape harvest and Tbilisoba
- The grape harvest in Kakheti usually runs from early September to mid October, depending on the weather and the vineyard, and Tbilisoba, the city festival, is normally held on a weekend in early October (3 and 4 October in 2026; a travel guide lists 2 and 3 October for 2027, not yet confirmed). Rural roads and wine villages are busy, and the city squares are crowded during the festival, so download maps for the countryside and save your bookings offline.

Questions about Tbilisi
- Is there signal on the road to Kazbegi?
- Mostly yes through the villages and weaker over the high pass. Download offline maps for the road and mountain walks.
- How much does an eSIM for Tbilisi cost?
- Tbilisi uses the Georgia plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
- Do I need a local SIM card in Tbilisi?
- No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
- How is it different from roaming in Tbilisi?
- With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
- Which networks does the Tbilisi eSIM use?
- Wigoo connects to Geocell, Beeline, and Magti, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
- Can I add more data?
- Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
- Do I keep my phone number?
- Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
- When do the validity days start?
- Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
- How long do I have to install the eSIM?
- An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
- Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
- Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
- What happens when the data runs out?
- Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.
- When should I install the eSIM?
- Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
