Bali: what to know before you go

Arriving
Ngurah Rai (DPS) is in the south, near Kuta and Seminyak. Ubud, Canggu and Uluwatu are each about an hour away by car or scooter.
The tourist levy
Bali charges foreign visitors a tourist levy that you pay online or on arrival. The amount and the process can change, so check the official site before you go.
Coverage
The south and the main towns have strong coverage. Mountains, the north coast and the east have patches with weaker signal.
Nearby islands
Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, the Gili Islands and Lombok are reached by boat. Signal is good in the villages and weaker on cliff roads.
Rides
Ride apps work in some areas, and some local taxi groups restrict pickups. A map helps you meet the driver at the right place.

How much data you need

A week of maps, rides and photos takes about 3 to 5 GB.

Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.

Bali: when people go

November 2026 to March 2027: rainy season
The national weather agency expects the rainy season to start in parts of Bali in November and across most of the island in December, with the peak from December 2026 to February 2027. Rough seas can cancel or merge fast boat sailings to Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and the Gili Islands at short notice, so confirm the crossing the day before and keep your tickets on the phone.
Late December 2026 to early January 2027: Christmas and New Year
Ngurah Rai airport is busiest in the days around Christmas and New Year, and the roads between the airport and Canggu, Seminyak and Ubud slow down, so allow extra time and save your pickup details offline.
8 March 2027: Nyepi, the Day of Silence
Nyepi is a national holiday on Monday 8 March 2027, and Bali is silent from 6:00 that morning until 6:00 the next, with Ngurah Rai airport closed to all flights. In recent years the communications ministry has asked mobile providers to switch off mobile data in Bali for the whole period, while home wifi, calls and SMS kept working, so download maps and tickets the day before and check that your stay has wifi.
July and August 2027: peak season
Foreign arrivals peaked in July in the 2015 to 2019 data, and guides describe July and August as the busiest months, with traffic at its worst and trips from the airport taking much longer than usual. Ride apps and scooters are slow in the south, so allow extra time and load the map before you leave the hotel.

Questions about Bali

Does the Indonesia plan work in Bali and on Lombok?
Yes. Bali and Lombok are part of Indonesia, so the same plan applies. Remote areas still have weaker signal.
How much does an eSIM for Bali cost?
Bali uses the Indonesia plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 10 plans, from 1 GB to 50 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
Does the Indonesia eSIM work in Bali?
Yes. Bali is part of Indonesia, so the Indonesia plans work there, on Indosat, Telkomsel, and XL. There is no separate plan for Bali.
Do I need a local SIM card in Bali?
No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
How is it different from roaming in Bali?
With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
Which networks does the Bali eSIM use?
Wigoo connects to Indosat, Telkomsel, and XL, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
Can I add more data?
Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
Do I keep my phone number?
Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
When do the validity days start?
Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
How long do I have to install the eSIM?
An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
What happens when the data runs out?
Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (1 Mbps) until the next day.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
