eSIM for Venice
Venice has no cars, narrow lanes and a water bus that runs your day. Your phone is the map, the ticket and the way to find your hotel, and it is also where the signal gets confused.

Venice: what to know before you go
- From the airport
- Marco Polo (VCE) is on the mainland. You reach the islands by water bus or water taxi, or by bus to Piazzale Roma. Ticket apps and a map should work from the moment you land.
- Maps lose you in the lanes
- The lanes are narrow and the buildings tall, so the blue dot jumps. Download the area offline and keep the live data for the water bus and for searching.
- The day visitor fee
- On selected days Venice charges day visitors an access fee booked online, and you show the QR code. The dates and rules change, so check the city's official site before you go.
- The other islands
- Murano, Burano and the Lido are covered by Italian networks. The vaporetto lines between them are easier to follow with live times than with the printed timetable.
- Hotel wifi
- Old buildings with thick walls often have weak wifi in the rooms. An eSIM with a hotspot is a useful backup.
How much data you need
Two or three days of mostly maps and messaging take about 1 to 2 GB. Live water bus times and photo uploads are what push it up.
Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.
Venice: when people go
- November and December 2026: high water season
- Acqua alta, the flooding of the lowest streets, is most often a late autumn event, and the MOSE barrier at the lagoon inlets is raised for the highest tides. Check the official tide forecast the evening before you go out, because your route may need to change.
- 23 January to 9 February 2027: Carnival
- The official programme runs from 23 January to Shrove Tuesday, 9 February 2027, with visitors in costume filling the lanes around St Mark's Square. Allow extra time for every walk and download your map before you go out.
- 8 May to 21 November 2027: Architecture Biennale
- The 20th International Architecture Exhibition runs at the Giardini and the Arsenale, open from 10 am to 6 pm and closed on Mondays. Plan the day around those hours and keep your ticket saved offline.
- 17 and 18 July 2027: Festa del Redentore
- Fireworks light the St Mark's Basin on the Saturday night, 17 July, a pontoon bridge crosses the Giudecca Canal to the Redentore church, and the votive Mass and regatta follow on Sunday 18 July, as the festival falls on the third weekend of July. The waterfront is crowded late into the night, so plan your way back to your lodging before the fireworks begin.

Questions about Venice
- Will my phone work in the narrow streets and between the buildings?
- Signal is generally fine, but GPS accuracy suffers. Download an offline map of Venice so the route does not depend on a position fix that keeps jumping.
- Do I need the eSIM for the water bus?
- You can buy paper tickets, but the transport operator's app is easier and shows live departures. That is the part that needs data.
- How much does an eSIM for Venice cost?
- Venice uses the Italy plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 10 plans, from 1 GB to 50 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
- Do I need a local SIM card in Venice?
- No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
- How is it different from roaming in Venice?
- If your SIM is from the EU, roaming here costs the same as at home, within the data your plan allows abroad. The eSIM helps when that allowance runs out, or when your line is from outside the EU: then your carrier usually charges by the day or by the megabyte.
- Which networks does the Venice eSIM use?
- Wigoo connects to Iliad, TIM, and Wind, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
- Can I add more data?
- Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
- Do I keep my phone number?
- Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
- When do the validity days start?
- Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
- How long do I have to install the eSIM?
- An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
- Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
- Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
- What happens when the data runs out?
- Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (500 Kbps) until the next day.
- When should I install the eSIM?
- Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
