Wadi Rum: what to know before you go

The visitor centre and Rum village
Visitors check in and pay the entrance at the visitor centre, and Rum village is about 7 km further. The Jordan Pass may cover entry, so check the official Jordan Pass site and have data or Wi-Fi ready to show it.
Bedouin camps and jeeps
Bedouin families run the camps and jeep tours, with meals and overnight stays. Tours from camps outside the protected area differ from those inside it, so ask where your camp is.
Signal in the desert
Measurements show only a handful of scattered 4G points across the protected area, too few to judge. We found no reliable source on coverage at the camps, so ask your camp whether it has Wi-Fi or signal.
Aqaba and Petra
Aqaba is about an hour from the protected area by road and Petra about an hour and a half by the main road, so a night in the desert fits between the two. Save both sets of bookings offline.
The stops on a jeep tour
Jabal Ram, the highest peak in central Rum at about 1,734 metres, the Khaz'ali canyon with ancient petroglyphs, and Ain Shalaaleh, the spring described by T. E. Lawrence, are among the stops. Save the tour route offline.

How much data you need

One night in the desert takes about 1 to 2 GB for the day, mostly maps, a pass to show and photos. Upload photos when you reach Aqaba.

Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.

Wadi Rum: when people go

December 2026 to February 2027: winter
Days are mild, but nights can drop close to freezing and rain is possible. Keep the phone warm overnight, since cold shortens battery life.
March to May 2027: spring season
With September to November, the months guides most often point to as comfortable, so this is when most people go. Book your camp ahead.
June to August 2027: summer heat
Daytime highs can exceed 40 degrees, and June is rated the least favourable month in one source. Heat shortens battery life, so keep the phone out of direct sun.
Late September to early October 2027: desert ultramarathon
A multi-day running race has been held in the protected area each autumn, usually from late September or early October, and the 2026 edition was listed for 28 September. Ask your camp about dates when you book.

Questions about Wadi Rum

Is there signal at the camps in Wadi Rum?
Only a handful of measurements exist across the protected area, too few to say, and we found no reliable source on camp coverage. Ask your camp whether it has Wi-Fi or signal before you book.
Do I need data for the Jordan Pass?
The pass is bought online before you arrive, so have data or Wi-Fi when you need to show it. Check the official site for what it covers.
How much does an eSIM for Wadi Rum cost?
Wadi Rum uses the Jordan plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $3.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
Do I need a local SIM card in Wadi Rum?
No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
How is it different from roaming in Wadi Rum?
With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
Which networks does the Wadi Rum eSIM use?
Wigoo connects to Zain. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
Can I add more data?
Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
Do I keep my phone number?
Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
When do the validity days start?
Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
How long do I have to install the eSIM?
An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
What happens when the data runs out?
Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (500 Kbps) until the next day.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
