The line runs through tunnels and remote tea estates, and the signal drops repeatedly. Download maps and your accommodation details before you board.

Nine Arch Bridge

Trains cross the Nine Arch Bridge several times a day and often run late, so ask your accommodation or the station for the timetable the day before. Crowds gather from about 7 am. Walking on the bridge itself is officially not permitted.

Little Adam's Peak and Ella Rock

The Little Adam's Peak path starts about a 20-minute walk from the Nine Arch Bridge and is usually walked at sunrise. Signal can fall to 3G or drop toward Little Adam's Peak and the bridge, so download the route first.

Tuk-tuks

Tuk-tuks are the usual way from town to the bridge and the trailheads. Agree the fare before you set off.

Ella: when people go

January to March 2027: dry season

January and February are the driest months in the hills and the sunniest, which is when the Kandy to Ella train is in most demand. Book seats as soon as the window opens.

14 April 2027: Sinhala and Tamil New Year

The government schedule says the new year dawns on 14 April 2027. In past years the railways added special trains around the festival days, announced only days ahead, and regular seats are hard to find.

Late July to early August 2027 (expected): Esala Perahera in Kandy

Kandy's big procession festival usually falls between late July and early August, and the railways have added special trains to Kandy for it. The 2027 dates were not announced. Kandy is where the Ella line starts, so rail seats and rooms are in demand.

October and November 2026, and again from October 2027: northeast monsoon

The highlands' wettest spell brings cooler weather and showers that are brief but intense, with November the wettest month. Views cloud over and trails get slippery, so check the forecast before you plan Ella Rock or Little Adam's Peak.

Can I turn up at the station for the Kandy to Ella train?

Some travellers buy on the day, but the reserved seats are the ones sold in advance and the popular ones go. Plan on booking ahead.

Is there signal at the Nine Arch Bridge?

The town has usable 4G. Toward the bridge and Little Adam's Peak it can fall to 3G or drop, according to eSIM guides, so download the route first.

How much does an eSIM for Ella cost?

Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.

How long do I have to install the eSIM?

An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.

Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?

Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.

What happens when the data runs out?

Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.

When should I install the eSIM?

Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
