Gobi Desert: what to know before you go

Getting to the south Gobi
Dalanzadgad, the capital of Ömnögovi Province, has flights from Ulaanbaatar and a paved road to the capital. Beyond it, the way to Bayanzag and Khongoryn Els is mostly unpaved tracks, so tours are driven by someone who knows the ground.
The usual stops
A south Gobi tour centres on Yolyn Am, a mountain valley with an ice field that lasts most of the year, Khongoryn Els, the dunes nicknamed the Singing Sands, and Bayanzag, the red cliffs where dinosaur eggs were first found. Tours run from about three to twelve days, and five to seven is common.
Signal between towns
Towns and soum centres have mobile service, but the open desert and steppe between them often has none. Download offline maps of Mongolia before you leave Ulaanbaatar and assume the camps are offline too.
Ger camps
Many ger camps run on solar power or a generator for a few hours in the evening, and Wi-Fi is rare. Bring a power bank, and ask the camp or your operator when you book.
Drivers and vehicles
Most tours use old Russian UAZ vans or Land Cruisers, with a driver who knows which ground to avoid. Agree the route and the daily distance with the driver, and fill up on fuel and food before leaving a town.

How much data you need

A tour takes about 1 to 3 GB, because most days are offline. You use data in Ulaanbaatar and Dalanzadgad for maps, messages and bookings.

Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.

Gobi Desert: when people go

November 2026 to February 2027: the cold months
Services reduce from late October, and December to February is a specialist-only window, so classic ger-camp touring is not usual. If you go, expect fewer camps open and book a tailor-made tour.
May to September 2027: tour season
Scheduled small-group tours and ger camps run mostly in these months. Outside them a tailor-made tour is the usual way, and some camps are closed.
11 to 15 July 2027: Naadam
Mongolia's national festival of wrestling, horse racing and archery, with public holidays from 11 to 15 July 2027. July is the peak of the tour season, so book vehicles, camps and flights to Dalanzadgad early.

Questions about Gobi Desert

Will my phone work on the drive to the dunes?
In towns such as Dalanzadgad, yes. On the tracks between, often not. Download offline maps and your tour details before leaving Ulaanbaatar, and ask the driver where the next town with signal is.
Can I fly instead of driving?
Dalanzadgad has scheduled domestic flights from Ulaanbaatar, with separate summer and winter timetables, and some operators sell shorter tours that fly in. Check the timetable before you plan around it.
How much does an eSIM for Gobi Desert cost?
Gobi Desert uses the Mongolia plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $5.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
Do I need a local SIM card in Gobi Desert?
No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
How is it different from roaming in Gobi Desert?
With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
Which networks does the Gobi Desert eSIM use?
Wigoo connects to Mobicom. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
Can I add more data?
Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
Do I keep my phone number?
Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
When do the validity days start?
Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
How long do I have to install the eSIM?
An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
What happens when the data runs out?
Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (1 Mbps) until the next day.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
