Mexico City: what to know before you go
- From the airport
- Benito Juárez (MEX) is inside the city. Use the official airport taxis or a ride app, and avoid unmarked cars.
- Altitude
- The city is at about 2,240 metres, so give yourself a day to adjust. It is not a phone issue, but it affects how much you walk.
- Timed tickets
- The Frida Kahlo Museum sells timed tickets online that sell out. Teotihuacan is a day trip and opens early.
- Getting around
- The Metro is cheap and crowded. Ride apps are useful at night and across distances.
How much data you need
A week of maps, rides and photos takes about 3 to 5 GB.
Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.
Mexico City: when people go
- 29 October to 2 November 2026: Day of the Dead
- The Zócalo megaofrenda runs from 29 October to 2 November 2026, and the city's large Day of the Dead parade is set for Saturday 31 October from 14:00 along Paseo de la Reforma to the Zócalo, according to press reports of the city government's announcement. Expect heavy crowds on Reforma and around the Zócalo, and more in Mixquic and Xochimilco, where traditional celebrations take place, so save your route and a meeting point offline.
- 21 to 28 March 2027: Holy Week
- Holy Week runs from Palm Sunday on 21 March to Easter Sunday on 28 March 2027, and the Passion play in Iztapalapa on Good Friday, 26 March, is described as the largest in Mexico: it draws very large crowds across Holy Week. The route runs for several kilometres and the area around it is packed, so plan your return trip before you go and expect slow mobile data near the crowds.
- 15 and 16 September 2027: Independence Day
- On the night of 15 September the Grito is given from the balcony of the National Palace to thousands of people in the Zócalo, and a civic-military parade starts from the Zócalo at 10:00 on 16 September (2026 times). Streets around the centre close, in 2026 including 5 de Mayo, Eje Central, Avenida Juárez and Paseo de la Reforma, so check the closures on the day and keep an offline map.
- Mid-May to November 2027: the rainy season (expected)
- The weather service set the official 2026 rainy season from 15 May to 30 November, and 2027 is expected to follow a similar window. Storms usually arrive in the afternoon and evening, often after 14:00 and strongest between 16:00 and 21:00, so book museums and outdoor sights for the morning and keep a weather app open.

Questions about Mexico City
- Is it safe to use my phone on the street?
- Be as careful as in any big city. Keep it out of sight in crowded areas, and use a ride app so you do not wave one down.
- How much does an eSIM for Mexico City cost?
- Mexico City uses the Mexico plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.99 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 10 plans, from 1 GB to 50 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
- My US plan covers Mexico. Do I need an eSIM?
- Check what your plan includes first: some US plans already cover Mexico and Canada, with their own limits. If yours does not, or charges by the day, the eSIM gives you data on AT&T and Telcel, prepaid, at a price you know before you go.
- Do I need a local SIM card in Mexico City?
- No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
- How is it different from roaming in Mexico City?
- With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
- Which networks does the Mexico City eSIM use?
- Wigoo connects to AT&T and Telcel, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
- Can I add more data?
- Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
- Do I keep my phone number?
- Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
- When do the validity days start?
- Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
- How long do I have to install the eSIM?
- An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
- Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
- Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
- What happens when the data runs out?
- Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.
- When should I install the eSIM?
- Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
