eSIM for Tromsø
Tromsø sits above the Arctic Circle on an island joined to the mainland by bridges, and it is where people go for the northern lights, winter whale tours and the midnight sun. Coverage is good in town, and the tours head out of it.

Tromsø: what to know before you go
- Northern lights
- Cloud cover is the main limit, more than any aurora forecast. Use a weather app that shows cloud cover as well as an aurora forecast. Guides drive out of town to find a clear sky, and small-group chases leave in the evening.
- Night tours
- Many night tours include hotel pickup and thermal clothing. They head out past mountains and fjords, where signal can fade, so keep the operator's number and the meeting point on your phone.
- Whale-watching
- In winter orcas and humpbacks follow the herring into the fjords, and the main tours are around Skjervøy, about 250 km north of Tromsø. That is a long transfer, and tours fill, so book early.
- EU and EEA roaming
- Norway is in the European Economic Area, where roam like at home applies, so a phone with an EU or EEA SIM uses its home plan at home prices. Visitors from elsewhere use a prepaid plan.
How much data you need
A week of maps, bookings and photos takes about 2 to 4 GB. Aurora photos and video on a tour can add more.
Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.
Tromsø: when people go
- September 2026 to early April 2027: northern lights season
- Sightings are never guaranteed, and November to February have the longest nights. Cloud decides most evenings, so check the cloud forecast before you book a tour and keep the booking message saved.
- 27 November 2026 to 15 January 2027: polar night
- The sun does not rise above the horizon, with a few hours of twilight around midday, and in the city centre it usually reappears in late January because of the mountains. The whale season in the fjords runs roughly from early November to late January.
- 18 to 24 January 2027: Tromsø International Film Festival
- The film festival fills the town's cinemas and hotels in the middle of the dark season. The Northern Lights Festival follows at the end of January or in early February.
- 20 May to 22 July 2027: midnight sun
- The sun stays up day and night, so the lights cannot be seen and the Midnight Sun Marathon takes place in June. Late hikes and boat trips replace the night tours, and signal is thinner outside town, so download offline maps for any hike.

Questions about Tromsø
- Will I have signal on a northern lights tour?
- In town yes. Tours drive out past mountains and fjords to find clear sky, and signal can fade there, so save the meeting point and the operator's number.
- Can I use my EU phone plan in Tromsø?
- Norway is part of the European Economic Area, so roam like at home applies to EU and EEA SIMs, with the usual limits.
- How much does an eSIM for Tromsø cost?
- Tromsø uses the Norway plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 10 plans, from 1 GB to 50 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
- Do I need a local SIM card in Tromsø?
- No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
- How is it different from roaming in Tromsø?
- If your SIM is from the EU, roaming here costs the same as at home, within the data your plan allows abroad. The eSIM helps when that allowance runs out, or when your line is from outside the EU: then your carrier usually charges by the day or by the megabyte.
- Which networks does the Tromsø eSIM use?
- Wigoo connects to Telenor and Telia, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
- Can I add more data?
- Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
- Do I keep my phone number?
- Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
- When do the validity days start?
- Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
- How long do I have to install the eSIM?
- An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
- Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
- Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
- What happens when the data runs out?
- Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (500 Kbps) until the next day.
- When should I install the eSIM?
- Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
