Wahiba Sands: what to know before you go

The drive from Muscat
Muscat to the edge of the sands at Al Wasil or Bidiyah is about two to two and a half hours by road. Fill the tank and buy water before you turn off the main road to the camps.
Getting into the sands
Camps are reached over graded tracks and sand with tyres let down, and the dunes themselves need a camp vehicle with an experienced local driver. Most camps will meet you at a nearby village, so you do not need to rent a 4WD.
Camp Wi-Fi
Some camps advertise Wi-Fi, but guest reports are mixed and one reported calls not always connecting. Ask your camp how reliable it is, and download offline maps and your booking before the drive.
The size of the desert
The sands cover about 12,500 square kilometres, roughly 180 km from north to south and 80 km from east to west, with dunes up to about 100 metres in the north. Most camps are 15 to 30 km inside the edge, so an offline map matters if you drive any track yourself.
Crossing on your own
Crossing the whole desert by yourself is not advised, and one experienced traveller says to go with at least one other vehicle. For a camp visit the camp's guide handles the sand.

How much data you need

A night or two at a camp takes about 1 to 2 GB, for the drive, maps, camp booking and photos, mostly outside the sands.

Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.

Wahiba Sands: when people go

25 and 26 November 2026: National Day holiday
The Ministry of Labour set these two days as the National Day public holiday for 2026. Check camp availability early if you travel then.
November 2026 to March 2027: the cooler months
Days are in the high 20s Celsius and nights about 12 to 17 degrees, and most guides point to October through April as the time to go. Book camps and the pick-up ahead, and bring a warm layer for the campfire.
June to September 2027: extreme heat
Temperatures can reach 45 to 47 degrees in the dunes and some camps close. Bedouin families gather at the Al-Huyawah oasis near the edge of the desert to harvest dates between June and September.

Questions about Wahiba Sands

Can I drive my own rental car into the sands?
Only to the edge, and only with a 4WD. The dunes themselves need camp vehicles with experienced local drivers, and most camps pick guests up at a village such as Al Wasil or Bidiyah.
Is there Wi-Fi in the desert camps?
Some camps advertise it and guest reports are mixed. Ask your camp before you book, and download maps and your booking before the drive.
How much does an eSIM for Wahiba Sands cost?
Wahiba Sands uses the Oman plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.99 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 10 plans, from 1 GB to 50 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
Do I need a local SIM card in Wahiba Sands?
No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
How is it different from roaming in Wahiba Sands?
With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
Which networks does the Wahiba Sands eSIM use?
Wigoo connects to Omantel, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
Can I add more data?
Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
Do I keep my phone number?
Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
When do the validity days start?
Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
How long do I have to install the eSIM?
An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
What happens when the data runs out?
Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (500 Kbps) until the next day.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
