San Blas: what to know before you go
- Guna Yala
- Guna Yala is an autonomous territory governed by the Guna General Congress, with 365 islands and about 50 of them inhabited. Tourism is small, with cabins, hammocks and a few hotels, and visitors follow the rules of the Guna communities.
- The road and the boat
- From Panama City a 4WD drive of about two and a half hours over the mountains reaches CartÃ, the main port, then a small boat of about 20 minutes goes to the island. Weather can delay or cancel the boat, so book transfers with an operator and save the pick-up details.
- Cash only
- There are no cash machines in San Blas. At the entry checkpoint you show your passport and pay the entrance fee and island tax to the Guna authorities, so bring enough cash in small notes for that, for lodging and for food.
- Signal and power on the islands
- Mobile signal and Wi-Fi are limited or absent on most islands. Cabins often have light only and no sockets, so devices charge in the main house or restaurant, with electricity running only in the evening and night in many places.
- Sailing to Colombia
- Sailboats link San Blas with Cartagena in about five days, with an open-sea leg of roughly two days and no signal. Trips leave from Portobelo or CartÃ, so ask the captain or operator how immigration is handled and keep your documents saved.
How much data you need
A short visit takes about 1 to 2 GB, mostly in Panama City and on the transfer. On the islands there is hardly any signal to use.
Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.
San Blas: when people go
- December 2026 to April 2027: dry season
- The main season, with the busiest weeks around Christmas and New Year and from January to March. Steady winds can make the sea rougher, and boat transfers still depend on the weather, so book islands and transfers early.
- 25 February 2027: anniversary of the Dule Revolution
- Each year the Guna commemorate the 1925 uprising that led to their autonomy, with re-enactments, parades and dances in Guna communities. It is a local occasion, so ask your island lodging whether it affects transfers or visits.
- May to October 2027: rainy season
- Quieter, with more rain, though showers are often short, and September and October are described as the quietest months. Winds are weaker and less predictable, so check the forecast for the boat transfer and for any sailing trip.

Questions about San Blas
- Can I pay by card on the islands?
- Plan on cash. There are no cash machines in San Blas, and the entrance fee and many lodgings are paid in cash, so withdraw in Panama City before you go.
- Does the Panama plan work on the sailing trip to Colombia?
- It works in Panama. There is no signal at sea, and Colombia needs its own plan once you arrive in Cartagena.
- How much does an eSIM for San Blas cost?
- San Blas uses the Panama plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $6.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
- Do I need a local SIM card in San Blas?
- No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
- How is it different from roaming in San Blas?
- With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
- Which networks does the San Blas eSIM use?
- Wigoo connects to movistar. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
- Can I add more data?
- Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
- Do I keep my phone number?
- Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
- When do the validity days start?
- Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
- How long do I have to install the eSIM?
- An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
- Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
- Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
- What happens when the data runs out?
- Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.
- When should I install the eSIM?
- Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
Crossing the border
San Blas also reaches into other countries, and plans are per country.
