The Walled City

The Walled City is a dense grid of lanes around the Badshahi Mosque and its gates. The lanes are narrow and look alike, so save an offline map and the gate you came in by.

The Wagah ceremony

The flag-lowering ceremony at the Wagah border takes place daily before sunset, and the start time moves with the season. Foreigners carry their passports, and arriving about an hour early is advised, so check the timing and save your ride.

Ride apps

Ride apps are the usual way to get around, and the list of services that work has changed over the years. Install one before you land and check that it accepts your payment method. Short trips can also go by rickshaw.

The Orange Line

The Orange Line metro train is the one operating metro line in the city, with elevated and underground stations. It runs past the Shalimar Gardens area and Lahore Central railway station.

When mobile service is switched off

On some days, such as the days of large processions, authorities have switched off mobile service in selected areas of Pakistani cities for hours. Hotel wifi, an offline map and a saved hotel address are the fallback.

Lahore: when people go

Around 15 June 2027: Ashura (expected)

The Islamic new year is expected around 6 June 2027, and Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram, around 15 June, depending on the moon sighting. Large processions fill parts of Pakistani cities that day, roads close along the routes, and authorities have suspended mobile service in selected areas, so keep the hotel address and an offline map saved.

November 2026 to January 2027: smog season

From November to January heavy smog covers Lahore and the rest of Punjab, and it has delayed or diverted flights and closed motorways. Allow slack around flights and check the airline's notices.

May to August 2027: heat and monsoon

Heat peaks in May and June, with highs around 39 degrees Celsius or more, and the monsoon brings the most rain in July and August with hot, humid days. Visit the Walled City early and keep a power bank.

Questions about Lahore

Do I need a visa for Pakistan?

Visa applications are made through the government's online portal. Use only the official portal, since look-alike sites exist, and check the current rules for your nationality before you book flights.

Can mobile service be switched off in Lahore?

How long do I have to install the eSIM?

An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.

Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?

Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.

What happens when the data runs out?

Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.

When should I install the eSIM?

Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
