Krabi: what to know before you go
- Getting in
- Krabi airport is about 25 km from Ao Nang, roughly 35 to 45 minutes by a pre-booked taxi or minibus. From Krabi Town, shared songthaew pickups run to Ao Nang, and buses and minivans link Phuket with Krabi in a few hours.
- Railay
- Railay sits behind cliffs and has no road. Long-tail boats take about ten minutes from Ao Nang, and boats also leave from Krabi Town. Check the last boat back before you plan an evening there.
- Island trips
- Day trips to Phi Phi and the Hong Islands run by speedboat or long-tail boat. The signal fades as the boat moves away from the coast, so save the booking, the pier name and the operator's number before you board.
- Hikes
- The Tiger Cave Temple has a staircase of more than 1,200 steps, and the climb takes roughly 30 to 60 minutes. The Emerald Pool, a forest pool inland, is often combined with the temple on a day tour.
How much data you need
A week of maps, rides, bookings and photos takes about 3 to 5 GB.

Krabi: when people go
- November 2026 to April 2027: dry season
- Calmer seas make this the main season for boat trips to Phi Phi and the Hong Islands and for Railay and Ao Nang. Book boat days and rooms ahead and keep the tickets saved on your phone.
- 13 to 15 April 2027: Songkran
- Thailand's New Year water festival is a three-day public holiday. Ao Nang's streets turn into a large water fight, so carry the phone in a waterproof pouch.
- 1 August to 30 September 2027: Maya Bay closed
- Under the national park rules, Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh closes to landings every year for these two months. Phi Phi tours still run without the beach stop. When open, boats use a pier on the far side of the island, not the beach.
- May to October 2027: monsoon
- Rough seas and rain disrupt boat trips and ferries, and cancellations are decided day by day. Check with the operator in the morning and keep a flexible plan.

Questions about Krabi
- Can I get to Railay by road?
- No. Railay is cut off by cliffs and is reached only by boat, from Ao Nang or from Krabi Town.
- Is there signal on the boat trips to Phi Phi and the Hong Islands?
- Not reliably. It fades as you move away from the coast and some stops have none. Save the booking, the pier and the operator's number before you board.
- How much does an eSIM for Krabi cost?
- Krabi uses the Thailand plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 10 plans, from 1 GB to 50 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
- Do I need a local SIM card in Krabi?
- No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
- How is it different from roaming in Krabi?
- With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
- Which networks does the Krabi eSIM use?
- Wigoo connects to DTAC and TrueMove H, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
- Can I add more data?
- Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
- Do I keep my phone number?
- Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
- When do the validity days start?
- Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
- How long do I have to install the eSIM?
- An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
- Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
- Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
- What happens when the data runs out?
- Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.
- When should I install the eSIM?
- Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
