Is there phone signal on Acatenango volcano? Barely, at base camp

Only a little, and only at some base camps. Recent trip reports describe enough signal at base camp to send the occasional text on Claro or Tigo, unreliable, with some camps getting nothing at all. The trail itself is described as spotty. We found no reliable source for the summit or the Fuego ridge, so plan the overnight climb as offline.

Our Guatemala eSIM connects to Movistar and Claro. Claro is one of the two networks reported at base camp; for Movistar we found no reports either way.

• Base camp: some Claro and Tigo signal, good enough for a text now and then, not for calls or uploads. Some camps get none.
• On the way up: spotty.

This comes from two recent trip reports (April 2025 and July 2026), not from carrier coverage maps. Treat it as a chance of a message, not a connection.

What that means for your hike

1. Tell family before you start that you will be out of reach until you are back in Antigua the next day.
2. Download the route offline and save your tour operator's phone number and meeting point as a screenshot.
3. Carry a power bank. No source mentions charging at camp, and cold drains batteries overnight.
4. Bring cash for the entrance fee. Reports put it at around 100 to 110 quetzales, paid at the trailhead or at a booth partway up.
