December in Ghana and Nigeria: staying connected for Detty December
December in GH runs from 1 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. What visitors need for a SIM in Ghana and Nigeria, which networks our eSIM uses, and the honest ranking of Glo in Nigeria.
December in GH 2026 runs from 1 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, organised by the Ghana Tourism Authority, and Lagos has its own December season of concerts and festivals. For the diaspora flying home from the UK, the US and Europe, the phone question is the same every year: roaming bills, or a local SIM and the paperwork that comes with it.
Ghana
- Our Ghana eSIM connects to Telecel, the network that was Vodafone Ghana until its rebrand in February 2024. Telecel added 300 new 4G sites in 2024.
- A local SIM as a visitor is registered with your passport. A 2021 statement from Ghana's regulator said visitor SIMs are active for 30 days, then need proof of a longer stay; we have not confirmed that rule is still applied in 2026. Non-resident Ghanaians can register with their passport.
- Mobile money: reports say MTN MoMo does not accept a foreign passport even where the SIM does. We could not verify it with MTN.
Nigeria
- Our Nigeria eSIM connects to Glo. In the network performance analysis by Nigeria's regulator with Ookla, Glo ranked last of the four operators on latency and jitter, and MTN first. For calls and video in Lagos, expect Glo to be the weaker of the networks.
- A local SIM as a visitor: you register with your international passport, and no NIN is needed if you stay under two years, according to the NCC.
- Outages: Nigerian networks had 577 major outages in the first quarter of 2026, 144 of them from power problems at base stations.
Events, provisionally
Reported dates for December 2026, from one secondary source and not yet confirmed by all organisers: in Accra, Detty Rave on 27 December and AfroFuture from 28 to 30 December; in Lagos, Flytime Fest from 22 to 25 December and Rhythm Unplugged on 21 December. Check with the organisers before you book.
