eSIM for Japan with a phone number? What tourists can get, and when they need one
Travel eSIMs for Japan, ours included, are data only. When a Japanese number really matters (taxis, restaurant bookings, LINE), what works without one, and where to get a real number if you must.
Our Japan eSIM has no Japanese phone number: it is data only. For most visitors that is fine: LINE, WhatsApp and FaceTime calls work over data, taxi apps and restaurant bookings accept foreign numbers or email, and your usual number stays in the phone. If you truly need a Japanese number, there are tourist SIMs that include one, and we say which below.
What works without a Japanese number
- Calls and messages: LINE, WhatsApp and FaceTime work over data in Japan, with no known restrictions.
- LINE: outside Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan and Thailand, new accounts are created with an Apple ID or Google account, not a phone number, according to LINE's help pages. LINE does not accept 050 or virtual numbers.
- Taxis: GO has accepted foreign phone numbers and cards since November 2023. If the text code cannot reach you, it offers verification by email, passport and selfie, and visitors pay an extra international service charge. Uber in Japan also accepts foreign numbers and cards.
- Restaurants: TableCheck is reported to accept international numbers. Tabelog sends its verification codes by email.
When you might need a Japanese number
Some ticket sites and delivery services ask for a Japanese mobile number, and 050 internet numbers are often rejected. If that is your trip, you need a real 070, 080 or 090 number.
Under Japanese law, a short-term visitor cannot sign a normal voice contract, which requires a residence card, but can rent a voice line with a passport. Some tourist products do exactly that: Mobal, for example, sells SIMs and eSIMs with a real Japanese number on docomo for short-term visitors.
A setup that covers almost everyone
- Install the Japan eSIM at home and set it for mobile data.
- Keep your usual line on for bank codes and calls from home.
- Install LINE and GO before you land, and sign up at home on Wi-Fi.
- Save the emergency numbers: 110 for police, 119 for ambulance and fire.

Do I need a Japanese phone number as a tourist?

How can a tourist get a Japanese phone number?
With a voice rental line on a passport, sold by tourist providers such as Mobal. A normal contract requires a residence card.
