Is there phone signal on Kilimanjaro? Not on every network
Kilimanjaro has had internet at Horombo, Kibo and even Uhuru Peak since 2022, but on TTCL's network. On Airtel, which our eSIM uses, there are no measurements above the gates. What that means for your climb.
On Airtel, which our Tanzania eSIM uses, do not count on it above the gates. Kilimanjaro does have a mountain network: TTCL, Tanzania's state operator, connected the camps below 3,795 metres in August 2022, and Horombo, Kibo and Uhuru Peak in December 2022, with Huawei equipment. But that is TTCL's network, and our eSIM does not use it.
For Airtel, crowd-sourced measurements on nPerf's map show 3G near the Marangu Gate and nothing on any route above it: not at Machame, Shira, Barranco, Karanga or Barafu, nor at Mandara, Horombo or Kibo huts, nor at the summit.

An area without measurements is not proof of no signal, but on a mountain where Vodacom users do test and Airtel shows nothing, we would plan the climb as offline.
How climbers stay in touch
- Guides carry satellite phones. Ask your operator how it works for emergencies and messages home.
- Satellite messengers such as a Garmin inReach or Zoleo can be rented locally.
- Moshi and Arusha have normal Airtel 4G: that is where to sort out everything before and after.
What to prepare
- Tell family you will be out of reach for the whole climb, and give them your operator's contact.
- Download everything you want to read or listen to before you reach the gate.
- Carry a power bank: there are no power outlets on the mountain, and cold drains batteries fast.

Some huts on the Marangu route have been reported with Wi-Fi, but reports disagree on how reliable it is. Do not plan around it.
