Medjugorje and roaming: Bosnia is outside the EU, and your phone knows it
Bosnia and Herzegovina is not in EU roaming, so a pilgrimage to Medjugorje can cost more on the phone bill than expected. What operators charge, and how to stay connected for less.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is not part of EU roaming. A phone plan from Italy, Poland, Ireland or anywhere else in the EU does not work at home prices in Medjugorje. The EU authorised talks to extend "roam like at home" to the Western Balkans on 4 June 2026, but there is no date yet, and until then your operator's own price list applies.
That matters, because Medjugorje has grown since the Vatican's approval in September 2024: around 350,000 communions in August 2025 alone, up from 325,000 a year earlier.
What operators charge in Bosnia
Prices vary widely, and some are high per megabyte. A few examples reported in late 2025:

Check your own operator before you leave, and if you have no pass, turn off data roaming on your home line before you cross the border. Many pilgrims come by coach through Croatia, which is in the EU, and the phone switches to a Bosnian network without warning.
