Salar de Uyuni: what to know before you go
- The tours
- Tours leave from Uyuni town and last one to three days, in small groups with a driver and guide. On a three-day tour the first day covers the salt flat and Isla Incahuasi, the second the lagoons and Laguna Colorada, and the third the Sol de Mañana geysers and hot springs.
- Altitude
- Uyuni is at about 3,650 metres and the southern circuit climbs to around 5,000 metres, so give yourself a day to adjust before you go. Cold nights also drain a phone battery faster.
- Where there is signal
- Uyuni town and Colchani, the village at the edge of the flat where most tours stop first, are listed with 4G. Out on the flat, at Isla Incahuasi and on the circuit to Laguna Colorada there is no confirmed coverage, so treat the tour as offline.
- Hostels and power
- Hostels on the southern circuit offer little. Travellers report Wi-Fi that barely works or is paid, and electricity only in the evening, so carry a power bank and charge whenever you see a socket.
- Cash and the Chile border
- Entrance fees for places such as Isla Incahuasi and the Eduardo Avaroa reserve are usually paid in cash in bolivianos and are often not included in the tour price, so ask your operator. The three-day tour often ends at the Chilean border with a transfer to San Pedro de Atacama, so keep your passport and onward bookings saved.
How much data you need
A three-day tour takes under 1 GB on the road, because there is no signal for most of it. If you end in San Pedro de Atacama you will need a plan for Chile.
Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.
Salar de Uyuni: when people go
- December 2026 to March 2027: rainy season and the mirror effect
- A thin layer of water turns the flat into a mirror. The same water can make parts of it impassable for jeeps and Isla Incahuasi can be unreachable, so routes change. Confirm the plan with your operator and keep the confirmation on the phone.
- June to September 2027: dry season
- The whole flat and the salt crust patterns are accessible, and nights on the tour route can reach minus 15 to minus 20 degrees. July is often cited as a peak, so book the tour ahead from home.

Questions about Salar de Uyuni
- Is the mirror effect there all year?
- No. It needs a thin layer of water, which comes in the rainy season, roughly December to March. In the dry season the flat is white salt crust with polygon patterns.
- Can I use my Bolivia plan in San Pedro de Atacama?
- No. The Bolivia plan works in Bolivia. If your tour ends in Chile, you need a Chile plan there.
- How much does an eSIM for Salar de Uyuni cost?
- Salar de Uyuni uses the Bolivia plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $8.99 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
- Do I need a local SIM card in Salar de Uyuni?
- No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
- How is it different from roaming in Salar de Uyuni?
- With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
- Which networks does the Salar de Uyuni eSIM use?
- Wigoo connects to VIVA. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
- Can I add more data?
- Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
- Do I keep my phone number?
- Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
- When do the validity days start?
- Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
- How long do I have to install the eSIM?
- An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
- Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
- Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
- What happens when the data runs out?
- Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (1 Mbps) until the next day.
- When should I install the eSIM?
- Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.

Salar de Uyuni also reaches into other countries, and plans are per country.
