Torres del Paine: what to know before you go
- Puerto Natales as the base
- The nearest real connection is in Puerto Natales, with 3G, 4G and 5G on the network our plan uses. A bus takes about two hours from there to Laguna Amarga at the park entrance.
- The W and the O
- The W takes four or five days and the O seven to ten, depending on the pace. About 95 percent of the W and O circuits have no reception at all, and the network our plan uses shows no coverage anywhere on the W.
- Bookings before you go
- The W and O need a confirmed refugio or campsite reservation for every night, and without them the mountain area is closed to you. Park tickets are sold online and shown as a QR code at the entrance, so check the official CONAF and park sources.
- Where a signal exists
- The few spots with signal are on a network our plan does not use: the windy pass on the way up to Base Torres, near some park gates and some refugios. The Vértice refugios at Paine Grande and Grey give free WhatsApp and 30 minutes of internet per stay since January 2026, so agree check-in times with family there.
- Wind and weather
- The weather changes fast and the wind is strong, so check the forecast each morning in Puerto Natales or at a refugio with Wi-Fi. Save it first, because you cannot refresh it on the trail.
How much data you need
Most of the data goes in Puerto Natales, on bookings, forecasts, map downloads and messages. About 1 to 2 GB covers a trek, since the trail is offline.
Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.
Torres del Paine: when people go
- December 2026 to February 2027: the busiest months
- Refugios and campsites need booking well in advance, and the wind is strongest in December and January. Keep confirmations and the forecast saved offline.
- March to April 2027: autumn colours and the end of the season
- Winds are calmer and the lenga forests turn red, but sources report that the O circuit usually closes by late March and parts of the W by late April. Check the official park bulletin for dates before you book.
- May to September 2027: winter
- Most refugios close, snow can close trails and has closed the park before, and a certified guide is recommended or required on some trails. Daylight is about eight hours in June and July, so confirm access with the park before you travel.

Questions about Torres del Paine
- Do I need to book the refugios before I arrive in Chile?
- Yes. The W and O need a confirmed reservation for every night, and a park ticket from the official portal. Without them you cannot enter the mountain area, so book before you travel and save the confirmations.
- How do I get a message out from the trail?
- Use the free WhatsApp at the Vértice refugios at Paine Grande and Grey, or carry a satellite messenger if you walk the O or go without a guide.
- How much does an eSIM for Torres del Paine cost?
- Torres del Paine uses the Chile plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $3.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
- Do I need a local SIM card in Torres del Paine?
- No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
- How is it different from roaming in Torres del Paine?
- With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
- Which networks does the Torres del Paine eSIM use?
- Wigoo connects to CLARO CL and movistar. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
- Can I add more data?
- Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
- Do I keep my phone number?
- Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
- When do the validity days start?
- Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
- How long do I have to install the eSIM?
- An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
- Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
- Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
- What happens when the data runs out?
- Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.
- When should I install the eSIM?
- Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
