Galápagos: what to know before you go

Where there is signal
Baltra airport, most of Santa Cruz including Puerto Ayora, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristóbal and parts of southern Isabela have mobile coverage. At sea and at most visitor sites there is generally none.
Cruise or land-based
On a cruise the signal ends when the boat leaves port. Since 2024 satellite wifi has become common on boats, sometimes paid and sometimes only in the lounge and dining areas, so ask the operator before you book. A land-based trip with day tours from the towns keeps you online each evening.
Entry formalities
Visitors need a transit control card and pay a park entry fee. How they are bought has changed recently, so use the official channels, check the current method and keep the receipts and confirmations on your phone.
Getting between islands
From Baltra airport to Puerto Ayora the way is a bus, a short ferry across the Itabaca channel and a second road leg, so save the hotel address offline. Boats between the inhabited islands take around two hours, and tickets are best bought a day ahead.
Do the errands in town
Bookings, bank checks and uploads are best done in Puerto Ayora or Puerto Baquerizo Moreno before a trip out to sea, since the next signal may be days away. Tell family which days you will be at sea.

How much data you need

A week in the towns with maps and photos takes about 2 to 3 GB. A cruise week uses less, because most of it is spent offline.

Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.

Galápagos: when people go

Mid-December 2026 to mid-January 2027: Christmas and New Year
High season follows holiday travel, and cruises for these weeks sell out far ahead. Flights, boats and rooms in the towns fill too, so book early and keep confirmations saved offline.
December 2026 to May 2027: warm and wet season
Most sources describe this as the warm season, with hot sun, showers, and calmer, warmer seas. Boat days are long and offline either way, so download maps and documents in town beforehand.
June to August 2027: summer holidays and the cool season
Summer holidays in North America and Europe fill the second peak of the year. The cool garúa season brings mist and cooler water, with rougher seas reported from July to September, and cruise schedules can change.

Questions about Galápagos

Can I use my phone on a Galápagos cruise?
Once the boat leaves port the mobile signal is gone, and most visitor sites have none. Many boats now have satellite wifi, sometimes paid or limited to common areas, so ask your operator before you book.
Does the Ecuador plan work in the Galápagos?
Yes, the islands are Ecuadorian territory, so the same plan applies in the towns of the inhabited islands. It cannot add signal where there is none, which means at sea and at most visitor sites.
How much does an eSIM for Galápagos cost?
Galápagos uses the Ecuador plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $3.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
Do I need a local SIM card in Galápagos?
No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
How is it different from roaming in Galápagos?
With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
Which networks does the Galápagos eSIM use?
Wigoo connects to Movistar and Claro. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
Can I add more data?
Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
Do I keep my phone number?
Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
When do the validity days start?
Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
How long do I have to install the eSIM?
An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
What happens when the data runs out?
Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
