eSIM for Cairo
Cairo spreads along the Nile, with the Giza pyramids and the new Grand Egyptian Museum on its western edge and the old centre far from them. Traffic is heavy, so a map and a ride app decide how much of the day you spend moving.

Cairo: what to know before you go
- The new museum
- The Grand Egyptian Museum near the pyramids opened to the public in late 2025 and works on timed tickets bought online in advance, so the ticket is a code on your phone. Use only the museum's official site, since the ministry has warned about fake ones.
- The pyramids plateau
- Tickets for the Giza plateau are sold at the ticket offices, at card machines there and on the ministry's website. People selling tickets outside the booths are not the ticket office, so buy at a booth or online.
- Rides and traffic
- Uber, Careem and inDrive all work in Cairo. Rush hour raises prices and slows every road, so check on the map whether a ride or the metro is quicker. Ride apps text a sign-up code, which goes to your home number, and that line stays active.
- The metro
- The Cairo metro has three lines and crosses the centre without the traffic, but it does not reach the pyramids. Plan the last stretch by ride app or taxi.
- Egypt's phone fee
- Since January 2026 phones activated on a local SIM pay a fee after a 90-day tourist exemption. A travel eSIM is a foreign line roaming on Egyptian networks, which press reports describe as paying no fee. The regulator's announcement does not mention eSIMs, so treat that as the reported position.
How much data you need
A week of maps, ride apps, e-tickets and photos takes about 3 to 5 GB. Navigation and the photos and video from the plateau and the museum use most of it.
Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.
Cairo: when people go
- December 2026 to February 2027: peak season
- Winter is the busiest time for visitors in Cairo and the cooler months are when most people tour the pyramids. Book the museum's timed ticket as soon as your dates are fixed and keep the code saved on your phone for the gate.
- 8 February to 8 March 2027 (expected): Ramadan
- Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February, with Eid al-Fitr around 9 March, depending on the moon. Major sites stay open, but hours can shift and some close earlier, shops close before sunset and traffic is heaviest in the hours before it, so give rides extra time.
- June to August 2027: summer heat
- Daytime temperatures regularly pass 35 degrees Celsius and often reach 40, so most people go to the plateau when it opens. A map and a ride app matter more in the afternoon, when walking between sights is hard.

Questions about Cairo
- Do I need data to get into the Grand Egyptian Museum?
- In practice yes. Entry is by a timed ticket bought online, and the ticket is a code you show at the gate. Save a screenshot as well, in case the queue is somewhere with weak signal.
- Can I use the same eSIM for Luxor and the Nile?
- Yes, one plan covers the country. On the river the signal is strong near towns and locks and drops between them, so download what you need before the boat leaves.
- How much does an eSIM for Cairo cost?
- Cairo uses the Egypt plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
- Do I need a local SIM card in Cairo?
- No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
- How is it different from roaming in Cairo?
- With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
- Which networks does the Cairo eSIM use?
- Wigoo connects to Orange, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
- Can I add more data?
- Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
- Do I keep my phone number?
- Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
- When do the validity days start?
- Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
- How long do I have to install the eSIM?
- An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
- Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
- Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
- What happens when the data runs out?
- Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.
- When should I install the eSIM?
- Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
