eSIM for Luxor and the Nile

Luxor sits on both banks of the Nile, with the big temples on the east bank and the royal tombs on the west, and Nile cruises run south from here to Aswan. Signal is solid in town and thinner at remote sites and out on the river.

Luxor and the Nile: what to know before you go

Two banks
Karnak and Luxor Temple are on the east bank, and the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple are on the west bank. Crossing the river is part of the day, so plan the order of the sights and save the map pins before you leave the hotel.
Valley of the Kings tickets
The standard ticket covers a few tombs chosen from those open that day, and some tombs, Tutankhamun's among them, sell separate tickets. Photography has its own rule. Check the ticket office on the day, since the list of open tombs rotates.
Nile cruises
Cruises between Luxor and Aswan usually take three to four nights, with stops at the Esna lock, Edfu and Kom Ombo. The signal is strong near towns and locks and drops in between, so download your onward bookings and maps before sailing.
Feluccas
Felucca sailboat rides leave from the riverbank in town. Within sight of Luxor or Aswan the signal holds, and the further you sail from town the weaker it gets.
Abu Simbel
Abu Simbel is a long day trip south from Aswan, not from Luxor, and it usually starts before dawn with a registered operator. The rules for tourist transport on that road have changed over the years, so confirm them with your operator.

How much data you need

A week of maps, e-tickets, photos and ride apps takes about 3 to 4 GB. Download maps of the west bank and the river before you go, because they are needed where the signal is thin.

Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.

Luxor and the Nile: when people go

22 February 2027: Abu Simbel sun alignment
Twice a year, on about 22 February and 22 October, dawn sunlight reaches the inner sanctuary of the Abu Simbel temple. One recent report counted around 2,000 visitors, and the date can shift by a day or two, so confirm it with your Aswan operator and keep the booking message saved offline.
December 2026 to February 2027: peak season
Winter is the high season, with thicker crowds at the Valley of the Kings and a wait of 15 to 30 minutes at each tomb, the ticket office and the car park in the busiest weeks. Start when the site opens and keep the ticket and the map saved on your phone.
June to August 2027: summer heat
Temperatures regularly pass 40 degrees Celsius, and sightseeing is uncomfortable by mid-morning. Most people tour at opening time, and the phone is mostly used for rides and ticket codes.

Questions about Luxor and the Nile

Is there signal on a Nile cruise?
Yes near towns and locks, less in between. Plan on downloading what you need before you sail instead of streaming on the river.
Is Luxor covered?
Luxor and Aswan are solid in town and thinner at remote sites, according to traveller reports collected in September 2026. Download the tickets and maps before you head out to the west bank.
How much does an eSIM for Luxor and the Nile cost?
Luxor and the Nile uses the Egypt plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
Do I need a local SIM card in Luxor and the Nile?
No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
How is it different from roaming in Luxor and the Nile?
With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
Which networks does the Luxor and the Nile eSIM use?
Wigoo connects to Orange, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
Can I add more data?
Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
Do I keep my phone number?
Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
When do the validity days start?
Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
How long do I have to install the eSIM?
An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
What happens when the data runs out?
Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
