Svaneti: what to know before you go

The long way to Mestia
Mestia is reached by a mountain road: shared minibuses from Kutaisi take about five to six hours. Small flights from the Tbilisi area and from Kutaisi exist, but they depend on the weather, so keep the road as plan B.
Mestia to Ushguli
The road is about 45 km and takes one to two hours by shared minibus or 4WD. In summer the vans back from Ushguli leave when they fill, with no timetable.
The four-day hike
The hike from Mestia to Ushguli usually takes four days through Zhabeshi or Tsvirmi, Adishi and Iprali. Mobile signal between the villages is patchy, and the path is unclear at times, so download a GPX track or an offline map.
Homestays and cash
Each village has homestays with Wi-Fi that is weak in places. Book a month or two ahead in the busy months, mostly through a booking site, and pay in cash on arrival, since there are no cash machines on the trek.
Mestia and the high villages
Mestia, the main town, is the place to count on signal. In the high villages, including Ushguli, coverage is thinner and guesthouse Wi-Fi is the fallback, and walks out of Mestia to places such as the Chalaadi Glacier and the Koruldi Lakes have little or none.

How much data you need

A week takes about 2 to 3 GB, since the hike itself is mostly offline and homestays have Wi-Fi in the evening.

Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.

Svaneti: when people go

December 2026 to March 2027: snow and ski season
Svaneti is snow-covered for about six months a year, and snowfall and avalanche risk lead to road restrictions announced at short notice, including on the way to Ushguli. The ski resorts near Mestia run roughly from December to April, so check road status with your guesthouse before you leave.
February 2027: Lamproba
A late-winter Svan festival, usually in February, when torches and lamps honour ancestors. It happens in the villages in winter, when roads can be restricted, so confirm access with your guesthouse.
July to September 2027: hiking season
The usual months for the Mestia to Ushguli hike, with July and August as the peak. Homestays along the trail fill up, so book early and save each address offline.

Questions about Svaneti

Do I need to book the homestays on the Mestia to Ushguli hike?
Yes. Book a month or two ahead in the busy months. Many are listed only on a booking site, meals are usually extra, and payment is in cash on arrival.
Can I fly to Mestia instead of taking the road?
There are small flights from the Tbilisi area and from Kutaisi, but they depend on the weather and the baggage allowance is small. Keep the road as a backup.
How much does an eSIM for Svaneti cost?
Svaneti uses the Georgia plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
Do I need a local SIM card in Svaneti?
No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
How is it different from roaming in Svaneti?
With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
Which networks does the Svaneti eSIM use?
Wigoo connects to Geocell, Beeline, and Magti, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
Can I add more data?
Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
Do I keep my phone number?
Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
When do the validity days start?
Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
How long do I have to install the eSIM?
An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
What happens when the data runs out?
Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
