Cyclades: what to know before you go
- Ferries
- Ferries leave from Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio and link the islands. Schedules change with weather and wind, so live times on the operator's app matter.
- Signal at sea
- At sea your phone can latch onto ship networks, which are billed at high rates and are not part of a normal plan. Switch off automatic network selection before you board and save your ticket offline.
- Santorini
- Oia at sunset is crowded and the lanes are narrow. Bookings for restaurants and tours run on message apps.
- Windy days
- The meltemi wind in July and August can cancel ferries. Keep a flexible plan and live updates on.
How much data you need
A week island hopping takes about 3 to 5 GB.
Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.
Cyclades: when people go
- November 2026 to March 2027: winter timetable
- Ferries run less often than in summer, with medium sized islands getting about three sailings a week, and some routes, such as the direct link between Santorini and Mykonos, do not run at all. Strong winds can also stop departures from Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio, so leave a spare day before any flight.
- 30 April to 3 May 2027: Orthodox Easter
- Orthodox Easter Sunday is on 2 May 2027, and on Good Friday, 30 April, almost everything shuts. Ferries to the islands sell out in Holy Week as islanders travel home, so book ahead and keep tickets saved offline.
- July and August 2027: peak season
- Santorini is at its most crowded in these two months, with cruise passengers filling Fira and Oia on peak days. Visit the main viewpoints before 10 in the morning or after 4 in the afternoon, and keep a flexible ferry plan.
- 15 August 2027: Dormition holiday
- The Assumption of the Virgin is a major holiday in Greece and the days around it are among the busiest of the year for ferries, with occupancy reaching 96 percent on some routes in past years, while Tinos receives pilgrims and its population is said to quadruple. Book boats and rooms well ahead and keep tickets saved offline.

Questions about Cyclades
- Why should I be careful with data on a ferry?
- Ships can use maritime networks that are billed at very high roaming rates. Turn off automatic network selection on every SIM before you board, and save your ticket offline.
- How much does an eSIM for Cyclades cost?
- Cyclades uses the Greece plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 10 plans, from 1 GB to 50 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
- Do I need a local SIM card in Cyclades?
- No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
- How is it different from roaming in Cyclades?
- If your SIM is from the EU, roaming here costs the same as at home, within the data your plan allows abroad. The eSIM helps when that allowance runs out, or when your line is from outside the EU: then your carrier usually charges by the day or by the megabyte.
- Which networks does the Cyclades eSIM use?
- Wigoo connects to Vodafone and Wind, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
- Can I add more data?
- Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
- Do I keep my phone number?
- Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
- When do the validity days start?
- Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
- How long do I have to install the eSIM?
- An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
- Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
- Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
- What happens when the data runs out?
- Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (500 Kbps) until the next day.
- When should I install the eSIM?
- Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
