eSIM for Serengeti

The Serengeti is a safari of long days in a vehicle, with Seronera in the middle, the Ngorongoro Crater on the way in and the Mara River in the north. There is signal around a few hubs and Wi-Fi at lodges, and in the empty stretches there is nothing.

Serengeti: what to know before you go

Road or flight
From Arusha the drive to the park gate is usually 6 to 8 hours, more to a camp, through the Ngorongoro highlands. Flights from Arusha or Kilimanjaro to the Seronera, Kogatende and Grumeti airstrips take about an hour or so and are usually booked as part of a package.
Seronera and the hubs
Measurements show 4G around Seronera, at the Naabi Hill gate and near Kogatende in the north, each with some no-signal points. For Lobo, Moru Kopjes and Ndutu there are no measurements, so do not count on it.
Ngorongoro Crater
On the rim and the crater floor there are no coverage measurements on the network our plan uses. Park rules limit the time on the crater floor and require vehicles to be out by evening.
Camps and lodges
Most lodges have Wi-Fi in the lounge or main tent, often by satellite and meant for messages, not video. Deep in the park, away from lodges and main tracks, expect nothing on any network, so upload photos at a lodge or back in Arusha.
The Mara across the border
The Masai Mara in Kenya is the same ecosystem, but visitors do not simply drive from one park into the other. Crossing means border formalities, by an official crossing or a cross-border flight, and the options change, so ask your operator.

How much data you need

A safari of 4 to 7 days takes about 2 to 4 GB. Signal is limited to a few hubs, so most of the time you are offline and photos go up over lodge Wi-Fi.

Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.

Serengeti: when people go

January to March 2027: calving in the south
More than a million wildebeest give birth on the Ndutu plains and in the southern Serengeti from about late January into March, peaking in February. Demand is high, and there are no coverage measurements for Ndutu, so plan it as offline.
March to May 2027: the long rains
Roads get muddy, some camps close for a while and game drives are harder in April and May. Flying in is often recommended over the long drive, so keep flight vouchers saved offline.
July to October 2027: the northern crossings
The herds reach the Mara River in the north, and the crossings run from July to October, peaking in August and September. Crossings are unpredictable from day to day, and measurements near Kogatende show 2G to 4G in places, so expect hours at the riverbank with little connection.

Questions about Serengeti

Is there signal in the Ngorongoro Crater?
We cannot confirm it. There are no coverage measurements on the network our plan uses for the rim or the floor, so download your maps and tickets before you go down.
Does a Tanzania plan work in the Masai Mara?
No. A Tanzania plan covers Tanzania only, so on the Kenyan side you need a Kenya plan.
How much does an eSIM for Serengeti cost?
Serengeti uses the Tanzania plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $6.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
Do I need a local SIM card in Serengeti?
No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
How is it different from roaming in Serengeti?
With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
Which networks does the Serengeti eSIM use?
Wigoo connects to Airtel, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
Can I add more data?
Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
Do I keep my phone number?
Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
When do the validity days start?
Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
How long do I have to install the eSIM?
An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
What happens when the data runs out?
Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.

Crossing the border

Serengeti also reaches into other countries, and plans are per country.
