Masai Mara: what to know before you go

Fly or drive
Many visitors fly from Nairobi's Wilson Airport to an airstrip near their camp in about an hour, while the drive takes roughly 4 to 5 hours, with heavy trucks on the Rift Valley section. Keep the flight or transfer booking on your phone.
Reserve or conservancy
Inside the national reserve, off-road driving and night drives are not allowed and vehicles can bunch up at busy sightings. The conservancies next to it keep vehicle numbers lower and allow night drives, though not every camp offers them.
Where there is signal
Travel guides describe good 4G around the Sekenani, Talek and Oloololo gates and at the main camps. Much of the reserve, the western Mara Triangle and the river crossings are patchy or have none, and the northern conservancies are said to do a little better. Many camps now offer satellite wifi in the main areas.
The Serengeti next door
The Serengeti continues across the border in Tanzania. A Kenya plan does not follow you across, so a trip that crosses over needs a Tanzania plan as well.
Mobile money
Many Kenyan shops, markets and matatus use M-Pesa mobile money, which runs on a local line registered with a passport and not on a data-only plan. Many visitors skip it and pay by card at lodges and larger shops.

How much data you need

A safari week of maps, messages and photos takes about 2 to 3 GB, since days in the reserve are mostly offline. Upload photos from camp wifi in the evening.

Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.

Masai Mara: when people go

July to October 2027: the wildebeest migration
The herds are in the Mara from about July to October, with river crossings reported from late July to September, and they head back south by late October. These are the busiest months, so camps and flights book out, and signal near the river crossings is patchy or absent.
November 2026: the short rains
A shorter rainy spell is reported in November, and many camps close during the rainy seasons. Confirm that your camp is open and the airstrip transfer is running the day before.
April and May 2027: the long rains
The main wet season turns dirt roads to sticky mud and floods rivers, and a few lodges and camps close for maintenance and staff breaks. Check your camp's dates and allow slack around road transfers.

Questions about Masai Mara

Is there signal at the river crossings?
Often patchy or none, near the river crossings and across much of the reserve. Download your maps and camp details in Nairobi, and upload photos from camp wifi in the evening.
Can a tourist use M-Pesa in Kenya?
Yes, with a local line registered with a passport, usually at a shop of the network operator. A data-only travel eSIM does not give you mobile money, and lodges and larger shops take cards.
How much does an eSIM for Masai Mara cost?
Masai Mara uses the Kenya plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $3.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
Do I need a local SIM card in Masai Mara?
No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
How is it different from roaming in Masai Mara?
With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
Which networks does the Masai Mara eSIM use?
Wigoo connects to Safaricom. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
Can I add more data?
Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
Do I keep my phone number?
Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
When do the validity days start?
Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
How long do I have to install the eSIM?
An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
What happens when the data runs out?
Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.

Crossing the border

Masai Mara also reaches into other countries, and plans are per country.
