eSIM for Bwindi

Bwindi is a dense mountain forest in south-west Uganda where gorilla treks start from one of four sectors. Inside the forest there is no signal you can plan on, so the useful phone work happens before and after the trek.

Bwindi: what to know before you go

Permits
Gorilla trekking needs a permit for a set date and sector, sold in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or a licensed operator. Dry-season dates sell out months ahead and changing a permit is limited, so check the current rules before you pay.
The four sectors
Buhoma and Ruhija are in the north, and Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south, with Kabale and Kisoro as the gateway towns. Sleep in the same sector as your permit, and save the lodge directions offline.
The long way in
From Kampala or Entebbe the drive is about 500 km and takes 8 to 10 hours. Scheduled flights from Entebbe or Kajjansi land at the Kihihi airstrip for Buhoma and Ruhija, or at Kisoro for the south, and are followed by a drive of about two hours.
In the forest
The forest can only be entered on foot, and a trek lasts from under an hour to most of a day on steep, muddy ground. Expect no usable signal, and keep the phone charged, in a waterproof bag.
Near the gorillas
A visit lasts one hour, groups are limited to eight visitors and flash is not allowed, so turn it off and put the phone on silent. Keep to the distance your guide sets, and put the phone away if the guide asks.

How much data you need

A week takes about 1 to 3 GB. The trek itself is offline, so data goes on maps, messages with the lodge and uploads when you are back in a town.

Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.

Bwindi: when people go

December 2026 to February 2027: dry season
Trails are easier and permits for these dates sell out months ahead. Book the permit and lodging before your flight and save the confirmations offline.
March to May 2027: the long rains
Heavy rain makes the trails muddy and slippery and the trek harder. Permits are generally easier to get then, and a waterproof bag for the phone matters.
June to September 2027: the longer dry season
The main trekking period and the hardest time to find a permit. Book as early as the permit system allows.

Questions about Bwindi

Can I photograph the gorillas with my phone?
Yes, but flash is not allowed and the visit lasts one hour. Turn flash and sound off before the briefing, and charge the phone fully, since signal will not help you in the forest.
Is there signal at the lodges?
It varies by sector and lodge. One operator describes reception at Buhoma as patchy, while other lodges advertise Wi-Fi. Ask your lodge before you book, and plan the trek itself as offline.
How much does an eSIM for Bwindi cost?
Bwindi uses the Uganda plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $7.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
Do I need a local SIM card in Bwindi?
No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
How is it different from roaming in Bwindi?
With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
Which networks does the Bwindi eSIM use?
Wigoo connects to Airtel, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
Can I add more data?
Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
Do I keep my phone number?
Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
When do the validity days start?
Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
How long do I have to install the eSIM?
An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
What happens when the data runs out?
Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
