eSIM for Cape Town
Cape Town is a city between mountain and sea, with a cable car that closes in wind, a drive down the coast and the Winelands nearby. Ride apps are the sensible way to move.

Cape Town: what to know before you go
- From the airport
- Cape Town International (CPT) is about 20 km from the centre. Ride apps work, and a prepaid plan lets you call one at arrivals.
- Table Mountain
- The cable car sells tickets online and closes in high wind. Check its live status before you go to the base.
- Power cuts
- Scheduled power cuts have affected fixed wifi in the past, which is why an eSIM hotspot is a useful backup.
- Getting around
- Use a ride app after dark and keep your phone out of sight in the street. The Garden Route is a long drive by car.
How much data you need
A week of maps, rides and photos takes about 4 GB.
Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.
Cape Town: when people go
- December 2026 to February 2027: peak season
- Travel guides place the peak from December to February, with January usually the busiest month and local school holidays from mid-December to mid-January. Attractions can be busy, so book accommodation and timed tickets early and keep them on your phone.
- 14 March 2027: the Cape Town Cycle Tour
- The 109 km ride around the Cape Peninsula has a full road closure along the route, and in 2026 the hard closures ran on Saturday and Sunday in the city centre, Green Point, Sea Point, the Southern Suburbs and the Deep South, including Chapman's Peak Drive. Check the City of Cape Town closure list in the weeks before, since it changes your ride app pickups and drive times.
- June to August 2027: winter cold fronts
- Cold fronts bring strong wind, high waves and heavy rain, and Chapman's Peak Drive has closed in storms because of rock falls and mudslides. Check road status and the forecast on your phone before you drive the coast.
- July and August 2027: cable car maintenance shutdown (expected)
- The Table Mountain cable car closes once a year for maintenance, usually for a few weeks in July and August. The 2027 dates are not announced yet, and while the hiking routes stay open the upper station and its facilities close, so check the operator's notice before you buy a ticket.

Questions about Cape Town
- Is it safe to use my phone on the street?
- Be careful as in any big city. Keep it out of sight in crowded areas and use a ride app, especially after dark.
- How much does an eSIM for Cape Town cost?
- Cape Town uses the South Africa plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
- Do I need a local SIM card in Cape Town?
- No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
- How is it different from roaming in Cape Town?
- With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
- Which networks does the Cape Town eSIM use?
- Wigoo connects to MTN, Vodacom, Cell C, and Telkom, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
- Can I add more data?
- Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
- Do I keep my phone number?
- Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
- When do the validity days start?
- Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
- How long do I have to install the eSIM?
- An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
- Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
- Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
- What happens when the data runs out?
- Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.
- When should I install the eSIM?
- Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
