Okavango Delta: what to know before you go

Maun as the gateway
Maun has the international airport, shops, banks and the safari and charter companies. Mobile coverage is reliable in town and fades with distance from it, so do your calls, bookings and downloads here.
Fly-in camps
Most camps have their own airstrips and are reached in light aircraft, with a limit of about 20 kg of luggage in soft bags, hand luggage and camera gear included. Check the exact limit with your camp or airline, and ask whether larger bags can be stored in Maun.
In the deep delta
There is no mobile signal in the deep delta. Some camps have their own slow Wi-Fi in the main area, meant for messages, and others have none, so ask each camp and tell family which nights you will be offline.
Mokoro and boats
Trips in a mokoro, a dugout canoe poled by a guide, and by motorboat are the usual way to move. Which channels are open depends on the water level, so the camp decides the plan and your phone stays in a dry bag.
Moremi and Chobe
Moremi Game Reserve lies on the eastern side of the delta, mostly inside it, with a few lodges and four camping areas. Chobe National Park is to the northeast and borders Moremi, so a longer trip often links the two.

How much data you need

The whole trip takes about 2 to 3 GB. You use data in Maun and on the way, and the camps are mostly offline.

Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.

Okavango Delta: when people go

December 2026 to March 2027: rainy season
Short thunderstorms, green landscapes and good birding, but some roads get muddy and some areas are too muddy for game drives. Check with your camp what is reachable before you pay for extras.
June to August 2027: flood peak and busiest months
Rain that fell in the Angolan highlands months earlier reaches the delta in Botswana's dry winter, and it usually peaks between June and August at about three times its permanent size. Wildlife viewing peaks in July and August, so book camps and flights early.
September to October 2027: hot and dry
Days are extremely hot, and wildlife gathers at the remaining water. Keep the phone out of the sun and charge it whenever the camp offers power.

Questions about Okavango Delta

Can I fly into the delta with a normal suitcase?
Usually not. Light aircraft allow about 20 kg in soft bags, hand luggage included. Ask your camp or airline for the exact limit before you pack.
How do I stay in touch with family from the camps?
Some camps have Wi-Fi in the main area and many have none. Tell family which nights you will be offline, and use Maun for any call that matters.
How much does an eSIM for Okavango Delta cost?
Okavango Delta uses the Botswana plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $8.99 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 9 plans, from 1 GB to 20 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
Do I need a local SIM card in Okavango Delta?
No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
How is it different from roaming in Okavango Delta?
With roaming, your own carrier bills the data you use abroad, usually by the day or by the megabyte, at the prices of your plan. The eSIM is prepaid: you know the cost before you leave and nothing is added later. Keep data roaming off on your usual line, so it cannot charge you.
Which networks does the Okavango Delta eSIM use?
Wigoo connects to beMobile and Orange. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
Can I add more data?
Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
Do I keep my phone number?
Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
When do the validity days start?
Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
How long do I have to install the eSIM?
An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
What happens when the data runs out?
Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (512 Kbps) until the next day.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
