Plitvice Lakes: what to know before you go

Timed tickets
Tickets are sold online for an hour-long slot at Entrance 1 or Entrance 2, and must be validated at the entrance you chose within the time on the ticket. You may arrive up to an hour late but not early. Sales on the day depend on availability, so book ahead.
Two entrances
Entrance 1 is on the Lower Lakes and big waterfall side, and Entrance 2 is by the Upper Lakes and the hotels. Both have bus stops on the D1 road and free luggage storage.
Boat and shuttles
The ticket includes the electric boat on the big lake and the panoramic vehicles between stops, which run every 30 minutes at hours published for the season.
Signal
Coverage is good near the entrances and hotels and weaker or absent in the canyons and forest trails. Download the ticket, the park map and your route before you start walking.
Getting there
Zagreb is about two hours by car or bus, roughly 130 to 140 km, with frequent buses. From Split it is around 200 km and about three hours by motorway, so it is a long day trip.

How much data you need

A day in the park takes little data. Plan about 1 to 2 GB for a long weekend with maps, bus tickets and photos.

Plitvice Lakes: when people go

July and August 2027: busiest months
The park works on a quota system, and these are the months with the largest crowds. The early slots are the quietest, so book the ticket as soon as your dates are fixed and save the code on your phone.
Late October 2026 to March 2027: winter
The Upper Lakes are closed in winter and usually reopen in early April, depending on the weather, while the Lower Lakes are usually open. Hours shorten after the clocks change on the last Sunday of October, and snow and ice can make the boardwalks slippery.
March to May 2027: spring water
Spring brings higher water and stronger waterfalls, and paths can be wet. The Upper Lakes reopen around early April, so check the park's notice before choosing your entrance.

Questions about Plitvice Lakes

Can I buy the ticket at the gate?
Sometimes, if slots remain, but the park recommends buying online. In the busy months slots go first, so book ahead.
Which entrance should I pick?
Entrance 1 starts at the Lower Lakes and the big waterfall. Entrance 2 is by the Upper Lakes and the hotels, and one guide describes it as quieter.
How much does an eSIM for Plitvice Lakes cost?
Plitvice Lakes uses the Croatia plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 10 plans, from 1 GB to 50 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
Do I need a local SIM card in Plitvice Lakes?
No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
How is it different from roaming in Plitvice Lakes?
If your SIM is from the EU, roaming here costs the same as at home, within the data your plan allows abroad. The eSIM helps when that allowance runs out, or when your line is from outside the EU: then your carrier usually charges by the day or by the megabyte.
Which networks does the Plitvice Lakes eSIM use?
Wigoo connects to Tele2 and A1, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
Can I add more data?
Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
Do I keep my phone number?
Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
When do the validity days start?
Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
How long do I have to install the eSIM?
An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
What happens when the data runs out?
Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (500 Kbps) until the next day.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
