eSIM for Split

Split grew inside a Roman emperor's palace, and its ferry port is the gateway to the Dalmatian islands. Croatia is in the EU and uses the euro, so a phone with an EU SIM roams at home prices, and visitors from elsewhere use a prepaid plan.

Split: what to know before you go

From the airport
Split airport is in Kaštela, between Split and Trogir, about 20 km from the city. A city bus (line 37) and an airport shuttle run to town, and a taxi takes about 25 to 30 minutes.
Diocletian's Palace
The palace is a living neighbourhood of homes, cafés and lanes, and walking in is free. Paid sights such as the cellars, the cathedral treasury, the bell tower and the temple take tickets, and the cellars can be booked ahead.
Island ferries
Ferries and catamarans to Hvar, Brač and Vis leave from the port beside the old town. Jadrolinija and the catamaran companies sell tickets online and at the port, and car ferries should be booked ahead. Some routes cannot be reserved.
Krka waterfalls
Krka National Park is a day trip by bus or tour. Most trips combine the Skradinski Buk falls with a boat ride from Skradin, so check whether park entry is included before you book.
The coast road south
Driving to Dubrovnik you can cross a short stretch of Bosnia and Herzegovina at Neum, with two border checks, or take the Pelješac Bridge, which stays in Croatia. Bosnia is outside EU roaming, so your phone can switch to a Bosnian network there.

How much data you need

A week of maps, ferry tickets, day trips and photos takes about 3 to 4 GB.

Written . Opening rules, fees, prices at attractions and event dates change, so check the official site before you rely on them.

Split: when people go

7 May 2027: Feast of St Domnius and the Sudamja festival
The feast of St Domnius, Split's patron saint, is on 7 May every year and is also City Day. The festival around it ran from 30 April to 10 May in 2026, with concerts and processions. The palace area is packed, so keep ferry and room bookings saved offline.
July and August 2027: peak season
The Split Summer Festival of theatre, dance and music usually runs from mid-July to mid-August. Summer is also the peak ferry timetable, which usually runs from late June to early September, with many more sailings and the longest queues at the port.
October 2026 to May 2027: winter ferry timetables
Jadrolinija switches to a winter timetable with far fewer sailings to Hvar than in summer, so check the timetable before you plan an island day.

Questions about Split

Does EU roaming apply on the drive to Dubrovnik?
Not through Neum: that stretch is Bosnia and Herzegovina, outside EU roaming. The Pelješac Bridge keeps you in Croatia.
Do I need data for the island ferries?
Mostly for tickets and timetable changes. Tickets are sold online and at the port, and timetables change by season, so check the day before.
How much does an eSIM for Split cost?
Split uses the Croatia plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. Plans start at $2.49 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days. There are 10 plans, from 1 GB to 50 GB, plus unlimited day passes.
Do I need a local SIM card in Split?
No. The eSIM is a SIM card in digital form: you install it from a QR code before you leave, and there is nothing to buy at the airport or swap in your phone.
How is it different from roaming in Split?
If your SIM is from the EU, roaming here costs the same as at home, within the data your plan allows abroad. The eSIM helps when that allowance runs out, or when your line is from outside the EU: then your carrier usually charges by the day or by the megabyte.
Which networks does the Split eSIM use?
Wigoo connects to Tele2 and A1, with 5G where it is available. Each plan lists the operators it uses.
Can I add more data?
Yes. You top up the same eSIM from the app, without installing a new one.
Do I keep my phone number?
Yes. Plans are data only, so your usual line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as always.
When do the validity days start?
Not when you buy and not when you install: the days start counting when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. A 30 day plan gives you 30 days from that first connection.
How long do I have to install the eSIM?
An eSIM that is never installed expires. The "Install by" date is shown on your order, on the site and in the app, so you can buy ahead of your trip. Install it before that date, on Wi-Fi.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Data used through a personal hotspot comes out of the same plan, and Wigoo does not charge it separately. A laptop uses far more data than a phone, so for work a day pass or a bigger plan is safer.
What happens when the data runs out?
Plans are prepaid, so there are no extra charges: when the data is used up, the connection stops until you add more from the app. Day passes give a daily allowance at full speed, then continue at reduced speed (500 Kbps) until the next day.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you leave, on Wi-Fi. When you land, set the Wigoo line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
